What is Awara mattress made of?

The Awara mattress is comprised of two layers: the top latex layer is made of either Rainforest Alliance-Certified Dunlop latex - and the bottom layer is made out of a premium individually-wrapped pocket coil system for support. Awara also utilizes natural cotton and Certified 100% Organic Wool fiber from New Zealand in the plush Euro Top. As a hybrid mattress, Awara utilizes the cushioning feel of soft, cradling latex as well as the classic feel and bounce back of spring coils to help bring you the best possible balance of lush comfort and solid support. In addition to using the best possible materials in terms of comfort, Awara also ensures the best possible materials in terms of naturality. With Awara you can feel at ease knowing that you are choosing an option that is not only better for you, but also better for the planet.

What certifications does Awara have?

Awara is serious about your well-being, which is why we have taken the time to get multiple certifications that ensure we are using the best possible materials for you and for the planet. Our latex is Rainforest Alliance-Certified. Awara mattresses are also free from petroleum-based polyurethane foams, and use water-based adhesives. Additionally, we use only non-chemical fire retardant certified by the SGS as well as natural cotton and Certified 100% Organic Wool fiber from New Zealand.

How firm is the Awara mattress?

With a plush Euro top and comprised of layers of premium quality certified organic latex, and a premium individually-wrapped pocket coil system for support, the Awara mattress ranks at ‘Luxury Firm’ on the firmness scale. This means that on a scale of 1-10 where 1 is a cement floor and 10 is a cloud, The Awara is about a 7 and for the Awara Premier about a 6.5. The 1-10 scale for firmness is standard in terms of rating mattress and optimal support for most sleepers falls somewhere between 6-8. The Awara mattress was specially designed to keep you comfortable yet supported for as long as you own the mattress. Test it out for yourself with Awara’s 365-night trial period and see if it’s the right fit for you.

What is the break-in period for Awara mattress?

Customers agree that the break-in period for a mattress is generally 30 days, which is really more about your body adjusting to the feel of your new bed than you needing to ‘break-in’ your mattress as you would a new pair of shoes. If you have been sleeping on the same mattress for numerous years, it may take a bit of time to get used to sleeping on your brand new mattress. This is a driving factor of Awara’s 365-night trial period. We understand that it takes some time to really understand the feel of a new mattress, and we want you to have more than enough time to make the right decision for you.

Will Awara mattress produce an odor when opened?

No, Awara will not smell. When a mattress is made with certain chemical materials there is a chance that you may experience a brief, light odor after unwrapping it. This is fairly common and the smells usually dissipate after a few days, however some people are sensitive to this smell. The good news is that with mattresses made with as many natural and organic materials as possible--like latex-- they emit very little odors if any at all. Because Awara is made with as much natural material as possible, there is a very small chance that it will produce any strong odors after being unwrapped and if so, they will dissipate quickly.

Does Awara mattress sleep hot?

No, Awara mattresses generally do not sleep hot. Awara’s natural latex is one of the most comfortable sleeping materials on the planet. This natural latex helps provide pressure-relieving support and does not retain heat like some memory foam mattresses do, ensuring that you’ll sleep comfortably every night.

Is Awara suitable for all sleeping positions?

Because Awara is at a medium, ‘luxury firm’ level of firmness, it is an excellent mattress for a variety of sleeping positions. It works well for back sleepers because it cradles the natural curves of the spine, helping keep you lifted and comfortable. It works well for side sleepers because the Euro top adds that extra amount of cushion needed to feel comfortable in the places of your body that are stacked on top of each other (e.g. hips, shoulders). It even works well for stomach sleepers because it isn’t too firm so it won’t hurt your rib cage nor is it too soft which can cause your hips to sink in too far and hurt your spine. All sleeping positions including combination sleepers can find their sleep satisfaction with Awara.

What’s a hybrid mattress?

In the past, standard mattresses were made of inner springs. Then, memory foam technology came out, introducing a new level of softness. But the unhealthy, synthetic makeup of memory foam (polyurethane) began raising legitimate health concerns. With a hybrid, you get the best in mattress technology: The comfort of foam + the unmatched support from a coil support core. According to Tuck.com, “Hybrids have certain advantages over innersprings, such as better motion isolation, less noise, and longer lifespans on average.” The Awara hybrid mattress has raised the bar on the standard hybrid mattresses. Our foam is natural Dunlop Latex, sourced from locally-grown rubber trees right here in the U.S. We are proud to have earned the esteemed Rainforest Alliance Certification that recognizes our brand for following rigorous eco-conscious and ethical standards.

What’s the difference between memory foam and Awara?

Memory foam is not to be confused with the natural Dunlop Latex you’ll find in the Awara hybrid mattress.

Memory foam is traditionally made of synthetic materials, specifically polyurethane, which has raised legitimate health concerns. Polyurethane is a known respiratory toxin. The Environmental Protection Agency has linked uncured polyurethane with itching and watery eyes, skin rashes, asthma, and other breathing difficulties in children and adults. Our latex foam is sourced from nature. We use rubber tapped from local, US Hevea Brasiliensis trees, and our latex manufacturing process has earned the esteemed Rainforest Alliance Certification for upholding rigorous eco-conscious and ethical standards.

PLUS, our Dunlop latex foams meet rigorous CertiPUR-US standards for content, emissions, and durability.

Our natural foams are free of:

  • ozone depleters
  • PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants
  • mercury
  • lead
  • heavy metals
  • formaldehyde
  • phthalates regulated by the CPSC
  • chlorofluorocarbons

  • What does Dunlop latex feel like?
You get a light touch of bounce, a cooling sensation that keeps the night sweats at bay, and more durability than most mattresses on the market.

    How can latex be organic?

Latex foam can be made from synthetic materials, or natural materials.

Your Awara is made with natural Dunlop Latex tapped from Hevea Brasiliensis trees.

    So, what does that mean?

Within the latex category, you’ll find 2 common ways latex is manufactured: The Talalay or Dunlop method.

We choose the Dunlop latex process over Talalay for 3 very intentional reasons:

The Dunlop manufacturing process creates just the right touch of bounce AND and a higher density mattress. This gives you the advantage of a lighter touch of bounce - which our customers love - and long-lasting durability over Talalay.Dunlop Latex is a more simple, and energy efficient process compared to Talalay. Dunlop ensures you’re supporting a process that emits less carbon into the environment and are helping to reduce your carbon footprint.

Our natural foams are free of:

  • PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants
  • mercury

  • Does the mattress need to be aired out for 24 hours before sleeping on it?

When a mattress is made with certain chemical materials there is a chance that you may experience a brief, light odor after unwrapping it. This is fairly common and the smells usually dissipate after a few days. Some people are sensitive to this smell.Mattresses made of natural and organic materials emit very little odors if any. Because Awara latex is made with organic materials, any odor - that likely comes from the packaging more than the mattress itself - will dissipate quickly. Our customers report that they are able to comfortably sleep on it the same night it arrives at their door.

    Is the Awara mattress kid-friendly?

With Awara, you can take extra comfort knowing that your child is sleeping on good-for-you materials that will take care of them for years. Our natural Dunlop Latex process creates a denser mattress, that will outlast any other type of mattress on the market. Our natural latex is biodegradable and organic with none of the synthetics you’ll find in traditional foam and spring mattresses. With that type of durability and touch of bounce, Awara is a fantastic choice for kids. Our Euro pillow top is made of organic New Zealand wool. Wool allows for natural moisture-wicking and is also known to be the most naturally flame resistant material - an optimal choice for interiors and bedding. It carries a high nitrogen and oxygen content that makes it naturally flame resistant. It also carries antimicrobial properties. Most mattress companies use toxic chemical flame retardants, but we meet the exact same safety standards with a natural hydrated silica as our flame retardant. We’ve opted for the equally safe, non-toxic route - a healthier choice for your entire family.

What kind of bed frame do I need with my new Awara mattress?

Awara works with any base that has a solid foundation. We recommend placing the mattress on a suitable basic frame - including a slatted platform or adjustable frame - or a box spring. Ideally, the mattress is raised off of the floor for maximum breathability and support. If you’re interested in upgrading your bed frame, we’ve designed 3 unique bed frames to suit your needs and budget. (Our Queen size platform bed frame is just $400.)
